History

It all started in 2013 with an Innovative Learning Grant proposal submitted by Heidi Kay, a UNIS Hanoi homeroom teacher, to prototype a mini maker space in her own classroom. Since the initial exploration, Elementary teachers have explored and incorporated making, tinkering and design thinking in the classrooms through the school's Teacher Inquiry in Action (TIA), a framework that provides opportunities for teacher to conduct inquiries for their own professional learning. The inquiry and collaboration among teachers resulted in the annual Maker Day (2015, 2016, 2017) and Faculty PD sessions, eventually infusing making and design challenges into our Units of Inquiry. In May 2018, a Maker Space Committee has been created to

  • Recommend a blueprint for developing a Maker Mindset at UNIS Hanoi

  • Propose professional development and education sessions

  • Develop a maker space in the new UNIS Elementary wing.

Beginning August 2018, UNIS Hanoi Elementary opened the school's first Maker Space to the students and wider UNIS community.
