Use Work Tools Safely
Using Glue Guns
It takes about 4-5 minutes for the glue gun to heat up. DO NOT touch the metal part of the glue gun. Squirt a bit of glue on the cardboard to check that the glue gun is working.
Never lay a glue gun to its side when it’s hot. Always make sure it’s propped up using the glue gun stand.
Never point a glue gun to another person.
Hold the object with glue for 30-60 seconds to make it stick. You have 10-15 seconds to move it around before the glue starts to harden again. KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE HOT GLUE!
DO NOT leave the glue gun plugged in and unattended. It can overheat.
If your skin gets in contact with the hot glue or the nozzle, immediately flush the area gently with cold water.
Using Box Cutters
Keep the blade as short as possible.
Wear a glove to avoid any small nicks and cuts.
Angle it away from your body.
Avoid cutting directly in front of you. If you cut at an angle, your hand will move away from your body if it slips.
Cut deliberately.
Apply a consistent, firm pressure while cutting. Concentrate on the material and watch the blade AT ALL TIMES.
Keep the blade away from your thumb.
Consider cutting halfway.
Rather than cutting all the way through the material, consider cutting only halfway through, flipping the item around, then cutting the other half.
